Drivers in Southampton are far more likely to agree that they are negatively impacted by video conference calls than the national average, with 77% of British adults surveyed agreeing that video conference calls have a negative impact on drivers’ ability to concentrate whilst operating a motor vehicle, and 54 percent strongly agreeing. People who strongly agree that video conference calls have a negative impact on their ability to drive increases with age, with 69 percent of adults aged 55 or over strongly believing video calls leave them distracted behind the wheel. Over the last year, Zoom, Google Meet and Microso Teams have hosted hundreds of millions of daily users and meetings each day. With the likelihood of blended working remaining high for many organisations, video calls will now being an integral way to keep teams connected. e Major Trauma Group is calling for more awareness around the implications for road safety as we adopt new working patterns. Worryingly, phone use continues to be a common habit amongst drivers. Research has found that 34% of drivers use their mobile phone illegally while in their car, and 29% say they make or receive calls on phones while driving. Mobile phone use for texting, video calling or otherwise when driving can have potentially fatal consequences and drivers must ensure they are distraction free and able to concentrate behind the wheel. Trevor Sterling, Chair of the Major Trauma Group said: “As we start to reassess the ways we live and work, we must be aware of the potential hazards faced for those commuting on the roads after long days in front of screens and how we can adapt to prioritise safety. There is no denying the advances that technology has made over the last year and the impact this has had on our daily lives, but it is now vital that we adapt our behaviours accordingly to prevent dangerous driving or serious accidents.” e next New Forest Militaria Fair will be on Wednesday 1st December from 7pm to 9.30pm in the Colbury Church Rooms, Deerleap Lane, Colbury (near Ashurst) SO40 7EH. ere are stalls o ering a variety of militaria items, and these events are an ideal venue for dealers, collectors and enthusiasts to get together to buy, sell, swop, exhibit and talk about all aspects of militaria.
