All of them were taken to Aldwick where an inquest was held and a Coroner’s Jury returned a verdict of accidental death. e bodies of Charlotte and Emily Parry were brought sisters, Emily and Charlotte. In 1815 it was unlikely that the children and the sisters had been taught to swim. Survival for the girls would have been almost impossible because of the clothes and shoes that they would have been wearing. e clothes would have been made from natural bres, such as cotton and linen which weigh a lot when wet and would have dragged their long skirts under the turbulent water. A er a while, whether from fatigue or cramp, the grip of the two boys gradually loosened and they slowly slipped from their father’s grasp and sank away from him. e elder Veryon managed to save Colonel Poyntz by supporting him by swimming with him on his back until help arrived. He certainly saved the life of the Colonel, who was in a very bad way, and it took considerable e orts to revive him from unconsciousness when he was at last brought to the safety of the beach. Six people died that tragic a ernoon, Charlotte Mary Parry aged 40, Emily Parry aged 29, William to All Saint’s Church, Fawley, where, six days later on 13th July 1815 the Reverend omas De Grey, laid them to rest in the same grave as their parents. e grave can be seen to this day, a weather worn chest tomb by the side of the path near the south west corner of the church. On one side it bears the inscription: To the memory of Charlotte Mary Parry aged 40 years and Emily aged 29 years. Daughters of Francis Parry Esq. and Frances his wife, who were both most unfortunately drowned o the coast of Sussex 7th July 1815.
