December 2020 started a new beginning for the Waterside Christmas Fire Engine. ere were many challenges but it had a very successful rst year. It gave much needed cheer to the Waterside Community and raised lots of funds for local charities. To continue the new beginning, the committee decided that a new logo was required and so a competition was run asking for a new design. Many entries were received and the winner was 6 year old Alana from Hythe. Her logo, not only included the decorated Fire Engine but a lovely view of the Waterside in the background. Well done Alana for all your hard work! Alana’s design will be the new logo displayed on the Fire Engine. A close runner up who deserves a mention is Jessica, aged 8 from Devon. Both Alana’s and Jessica’s design will be used for stickers. e Waterside Fire Engine is currently being decorated by Santa’s Busy Elves, getting it ready for its Waterside tour in December. The charity wants to hear from anyone who has any type of cancer at any stage, families and friends a ected by cancer or anyone who has a job or other interest in cancer services. Questions include the kind of worries and fears people experience from diagnosis to recovery, how non- medical support should be delivered, the quality and availability of support, and the accessibility of information and advice about di erent types of cancer. e responses will help Wessex Cancer Trust build an accurate picture of need; ensuring local people receive the best possible support from the charity. Launching the survey, Wessex Cancer Trust’s CEO, Rachel Billsberry- Grass, said: “It’s widely understood that a cancer diagnosis can have an effect on how we feel emotionally. We found through our own research in 2019 that 61% of people experienced worry, fear of anxiety. Despite this, support for cancer patients’ wider needs – including mental health, is often patchy and delayed. Many of you will be all too aware of the impact COVID- 19 has had on cancer services. If the estimates and statistics prove to be true, the next few years will see an increase in the number of people needing our support. We’d really appreciate your input on how your views and experiences have changed, so we can be ready to provide that support in the best possible way.” Access to the survey can be found at: www. wessexcancer.org.uk Pro2col Firewalk for Parkinson’s UK James Lewis, Katie l ’Anson, Jasmina Chehlarova, Michelle Grimaldi, and Lindsay Lewis walked bare foot over a 20 path of ery embers burning at 1,236 degrees Fahrenheit on Friday 12th November. The team has raised a fantastic £ 1,000 in sponsorship (plus gift aid), which will help to drive forward pioneering research projects supported by the charity Parkinsons UK, as well as the delivery of support services for those living with Parkinson’s, their families, friends and carers. Katie I’Anson, 33, HR Business Partner of Pro2col, was one of those who took part in the Firewalk. Katie has a relative who is living with Parkinson’s and when she saw the Firewalk was happening, she was determined to face her fear and do her part to support. Katie said: “I really wanted to give something positive back to this very worthy cause. I’m pleased to have conquered the challenge - I guess by that I mean it being over! I have never done anything like this before and I was quite nervous, but I’m proud that I’ve done it.” Melissa Rankin, Regional Fundraiser for the South West at Parkinson’s UK, said: “We want to say a huge thank you to the wonderful team from Pro2col for taking on this challenge for Parkinson’s UK. With more than 40 potential symptoms, Parkinson’s can devastate lives. We’ve made huge breakthroughs in the last 50 years, but there is still no cure and current treatments are not good enough. With the help of our amazing fundraisers, we can transform the lives of people with Parkinson’s.” Parkinson’s is the fastest growing neurological condition in the world, and currently there is no cure. In the UK, there are around 145,000 people already living with Parkinson’s, including approximately 13,653 in the South West.
