Its volunteers provide help, advice, and assistance to the homeless or those at risk of becoming homeless. e charity was formed in 2019 and runs three drop- in sessions in di erent towns along the Waterside each week, including a recent switch of venue in Hythe from St John’s Hall to e Cornerstone URC Church. e sessions at e Cornerstone URC Church commenced in August this year (2021) and the donation from the Barker-Mill Foundation will cover the costs of room hire from when they began up until February next year (2022). e Rev Canon Edgar Ruddock, Chair of Trustees at e Crossings, said: “Typically we’ll have between one and three visitors a session. At the drop-in you’ll find Andy Clarke, our Project Leader, together with two or three trained volunteers who will always offer visitors a warm welcome. The Crossings Team at Cornerstone URC council to secure housing. Within a couple of weeks, he was in a place. Having built up trust with him, he then asked the charity to help another family member who was in a similar situation. • For another individual, e Crossings arranged work training and helped them to open a new bank account, which was the support they needed to move on. e Rev Canon Edgar Ruddock added: “Our best compliment is when individuals leave with their head held higher as they walk out of the door.” Simon Barker, Trustee at the Barker-Mill Foundation, said: “The Crossings performs a vital role helping vulnerable people in the Waterside area, and we are delighted to be able to support the charity as it expands its much-needed services. The volunteers carry out excellent work and it is clear they are continually making a positive difference to people’s lives by helping the homeless and those at risk of becoming homeless. For someone sleeping rough, sometimes drying off and charging their phone is all they want.” He added that two recent examples of individuals the charity had helped were: • A young man who was at a desperately low point out on the street, who was helped to engage with the Local Hall Available to Hire Colbury Memorial Hall, near Ashurst, is now up and running and ready for hire with full facilities, including a well equipped kitchen. It has a main hall, with stage and lighting, and a seating capacity of around 200 plus two smaller halls. e toilet facilities have recently been upgraded and there are aids for disabled in place. ere are approximately 95 car parking spaces available for building users. Colbury Memorial Hall is currently used regularly by many local groups but there is spare capacity for a variety of activities/events.
