South Western Railway (SWR) and the ree Rivers Community Rail Partnership, in partnership with other local public transport providers, have launched a new ticketing product that is set to make integrated travel in Hampshire much simpler and easier. e new Waterside Wanderer Day Ranger ticket is now on sale and means that destinations such as Winchester, Romsey, Southampton, Hythe and the New Forest are all accessible for a day trip for only £13.50. is new multi-modal ticket uses standard, rather than heritage, railway lines and so opens a much wider area up to exploration. It includes unlimited o -peak rail travel within the ticket zone, unlimited travel on any Bluestar 8 or 9 bus, a return journey on the Quayconnect shuttle bus, one journey on the Unilink U1C bus, one journey on the Unilink U1A bus, a return journey on the Hythe Ferry and a return journey on the Hythe Pier Railway. Nick Farthing, Chair of the ree Rivers Community Rail Partnership and the driving force behind the new o er said: “This new product provides the mechanism for visiting the Waterside and adjacent New Forest without taking the car. It allows seamless travel on rail, bus and ferry with just one ticket, encouraging people to spend the day visiting attractions in the area, bringing much needed visitors to the area and in turn, supporting the local economy.” Peter Williams, SWR’s Commercial Director said: “SWR is delighted to partner with the Three Rivers CRP, and other local transport providers to introduce this new initiative, making it easier than ever before for people to explore a spectacular area of our region without having to bring the car”. Changes in the pier train introduced in 1922 were viewed with interest too. e evening concluded with open discussion and Alan taking questions. e lecture was recorded for a possible repeat presentation. As a part of its Member Supporter Scheme, Hythe Pier Heritage Association (HPHA) staged the rst of a series of lectures about Hythe Pier, its Pier Railway and the Hythe Ferry at the end of 2021. ‘Hythe Pier and Ferry on Postcards’ was presented by Alan Titheridge to an audience of members of the Scheme on-line via Teams. e presentation displayed 45 postcards from Alan’s personal collection, the earliest postmarked December 1904. Changes to both the pier and ferry boats could be understood as the lecture proceeded with the images being displayed chronologically, as was the case with the subsequent addition of the train.
