He read out a report from Lady Montagu, President of the Society, in which she highlighted the importance of gardens and gardening for ones wellbeing during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic. She also noted that COP 26 was being held at the same time where the issues of climate change and the environment were bringing a spotlight of trees and green space. In her report, Lady Montagu thanked Alan Baker, who has retired from the committee, for his 30 years of sterling service, particularly as Show Secretary. His knowledge and commitment will be greatly missed. His wife Emma was also thanked, by Richard Bavister, for providing delicious homemade biscuits at meetings and shows for many years. Alan and Emma were presented with National Garden Scheme gi vouchers and a special orchid as an appreciation of their longstanding support for the Society. e Society Chairman, Linda Dearing, reported on the year’s meetings. After COVID-19 restrictions eased, initially members met for outdoor visits. In May, a visit was made to Furzey Gardens. Minstead, which was looking at its spectacular best. In June Shallowmead Nursery in Boldre was the meeting venue where members were impressed by the sight of the propagation and care of thousands of plants for the wholesale and retail trade, the revamped sales area, organic food shop and Mabel’s Café. In August, a very successful Summer Show was held in East Boldre Village Hall. It was good to welcome new exhibitors and visitors to the rst show for nearly two years. Indoor meetings in East Boldre Village Hall resumed in September with a talk by Louise Godden on the dedicated work she does in the rescue and rehabilitation of hedgehogs. In October members were transported to the other side of the world and shown the very particular styles of Japanese gardens with an illustrated talk given by John Baker. The AGM was then followed by tea and delicious cakes and a lively and helpful Gardeners Question Time, presided over by Richard Bavister. The Society has a monthly programme of talks and visits planned for 2022. is will begin on a sociable note with a traditional English A ernoon Tea and Quiz (£3) to be held in East Boldre Village Hall in February. e annual subscription is £9, with no extra charge at talks for members.
