For me, old age followed retirement and I began more and more to nd speeding vehicles through the Village very intimidating even from the vantage point of our narrow and sometimes crowded pavements. en a few years back, I heard of the proposal to set up a Speedwatch Team of volunteers in Marchwood, coordinated by the Parish Council and Hampshire Police. I was one of the early volunteers, feeling that here at last was an opportunity for me to make a small contribution towards addressing the problem. Since then, and following short sessions of police guidance and training, I have been privileged to be part of a dedicated group of volunteers who use speed monitoring equipment at various stations around the village and beyond. Our main purpose is to demonstrate our concern and to discourage speeding motorists. For this reason, our presence is deliberately made as visible as possible; no hiding around corners. To give the operation some muscle, we are required, however, to pass on the registration numbers of o ending vehicles to Hampshire Police for action on their part. I have found my involvement in SpeedWatch over the last few years to be very rewarding and I have made a number of very good friends along the way. Occasionally we are treated to a disapproving gesture from a passing driver but these are far outweighed by the many friendly waves and thumbs up we receive. We are still a fairly small band, however, and more volunteers are needed to allow us to expand our presence further and to press home the message that Marchwood welcomes considerate motorists.
