Hampshire County Council is calling for volunteers to help vulnerable older residents to be con dent in travelling on public and community transport and combat social isolation as part of its ‘Travel for All’ scheme. e scheme is being operated in partnership with South Western Railway (SWR) and managed, on behalf of the County Council by transport planning specialists, Atkins. Councillor Russell Oppenheimer, the County Council’s Executive Member for Highways Operations, commented: “ We would really like to hear from volunteers who, with the training provided, feel they can give clients the support they need to travel independently on public and community transport. We would also like to hear from older, more vulnerable people who wish to travel this way but need help to increase their confidence, to get out and about more independently and realise how much they could benefit from travel.” e Executive Member for Adult Services and Public Health at the County Council, Counci l lor Liz Fairhurst, said: “I think this is a great initiative. A lack of transport in rural areas is the reason most frequently given by residents, mainly over the age of 65, for them becoming isolated and less active than they would like to be. I implore anyone who can commit to making time to support Travel for All and help those residents not to be cut off socially, to please get in touch with us.” Travel for All needs: • ‘Travel Trainers’ – volunteers to work with residents over the age of 65 years to learn about what travel options are available to them in their area, plan and map journeys and accompany them on their rst journey to give them con dence. • To hear form potential clients who would like to receive this support to help them get out and about in the community more, to boost their well-being. Anyone interested in nding out more about the scheme and what is involved, should contact MHA, who are implementing the project on behalf of Hampshire County Council and South Western Railway, email: beth.ward@ mha.org.uk or call 0756 861 1995.
