Our canine companions remain the nation’s favourite pet too. So, what is it about dogs that sends so many of us potty about them? Could it be… • eir loyalty • ey don’t judge us like humans do • eir incredible patience, they wait constantly • eir intelligence and skill, look at all the wonderfully important jobs they do • eir protectiveness, they make us feel safer o en putting us before themselves • eir unconditional love and a ection • ey relieve our stress and improve our health just by being around them • eir honesty, dogs don’t lie Whilst many of these attributes draw us to them, ultimately it is their looks that make many people choose a speci c dog or breed of dog. When we choose a dog or puppy purely by looks, all sorts of problems can arise further down the line if you cannot meet the needs of your dog’s breed. is is most commonly the reason why over 20,000 dogs are destroyed every year, new dog guardians didn’t research the breed, they went by looks alone. If you acquire a dog, count yourself fortunate, and do all you can to make their life a happy one because if you change your mind a er getting one, you could be sentencing your dog to a death sentence through no fault of their own. Dogs don’t have a choice where they live or who they live with, a er all. e biggest cause of death for dogs under three years old is behaviour problems generally caused by new guardian’s not researching their dog prior to getting it. When the needs of a dog are not met su ciently, all sorts of problems will most likely prevail including poor obedience, destructive behaviour, toileting issues, aggression, depression and anxiety, reactivity and attention-seeking behaviours such as excessive barking, jumping up and digging. We have developed a FREE short course for new dog guardians which takes only an hour to complete and is fully downloadable called ‘ Finding the Right Dog for You’ available in our on-line shop at: www. dogs2fosteruk.org/shop.ttml which will help you choose the most suitable dog for you and your lifestyle.
