On any one day, the Mountbatten Hampshire charity supports around 800 people with expert medical, nursing and domiciliary end-of-life care and bereavement support across the communities of Southampton and west Hampshire. e largest part of its work – the Mountbatten at Home service – takes place in people’s homes. is is backed up by a 21-bed Inpatient Unit at Mountbatten Hospice in West End and a self-help day and rehabilitation service based in the Hazel Centre. This extraordinary organisation, which also provides spiritual care, and professional psychological support, has now received nancial backing via the leading UK housebuilders’ Community Fund Scheme, which donates £1,000 to worthy causes in the region each month. Barratt and David Wilson didn’t stop there either. When the housebuilders heard that Mountbatten Hampshire needed to raise £1 million to make its buildings and facilities more energy e cient, they wanted to help. Sustainability is a high priority for the developers and is why they decided to donate an extra £10,000 to the hospice. Michelle Wheeler, Corporate Fundraiser for Mountbatten Hampshire is extremely grateful for the vital funding. She said: “As an independent charity, we need to find around £8m every year to run our services. We are indebted to our local communities who provide us with fundraising and volunteering support, along with organisations such as Barratt and David Wilson Homes, that can offer their help. This incredible donation will mean we can continue providing this vital service to the community. Most people think that a hospice is somewhere you come to die. In fact, our aim is to help people to live as well as they possibly can with their illness. We are also there for families and friends who may need bereavement support after the death of their loved one.” Mountbatten Hampshire provides art, music and complementary therapies that encourage people to live well until they die. It also o ers an education and training programme which aims to improve standards of end-of-life care in health and social care organisations across the region. It is this remarkable service the charity is providing that is the reason Barratt and David Wilson Homes made the decision to step in and o er their help. Tammy Bishop, Sales Director at Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes, Southampton Division, said: “After we heard about the services on offer at Mountbatten Hampshire, we had to help. The care the organisation is giving to people facing the end of their life and their families, is so important.” The housebuilders will also be o ering an additional £6,000 worth of landscaping enhancements to the charity to update its garden in West End. is will ensure it’s a pleasant and relaxing space for patients and their families.
