However con icting instructions had been issued requesting that ‘friendly’ aircra would y lower below cloud cover to permit identi cation and recognition by the observing ground forces. In the Southampton Area this was potentially a disastrous instruction because of the myriad of Barrage Balloon cables tethering the Balloons. Unfortunately the main Accident Reports for this aircra are missing so we will never know the precise sequence of events. Hood Air Observer age 31 Sgt John Burrow W/Op. aged 18 Sgt Harold Davies R/Gnr aged 20 All ve members of the crew were buried together at All Saint’s Church, Fawley on 21st August 1940, with full military honours. Members of the local community all turned up to pay their respects as well as the families of these young men. from the Marchwood Balloon base was struck, or from one of the other local Balloon bases. e aircra was reported as having 15 feet of wing being severed, which landed 2 miles away.
