Southampton, at that time, was heavily protected by barrage balloons. is was to protect the port of Southampton and also the fuel supplies at Fawley. e barrage balloons on that particular evening had been instructed to raise their balloon height to 4000-4500 . is should not have been a problem as the Whitely would normally be ying at 10,000 . However con icting instructions had been issued requesting that ‘friendly’ aircra would y lower below cloud cover to permit identi cation and recognition by the observing ground forces. In the Southampton Area this was potentially a disastrous instruction because of the myriad of Barrage Balloon cables tethering the Balloons. Unfortunately the main Accident Reports for this aircra are missing so we will never know the precise sequence of events. Whatever the truth was, surrounding this tragic accident, it resulted in all the crew being killed. e crew consisted of: F/O William Stenhouse Captain age 26 P/O Robert Butler Macgregor 2nd Pilot age 19 Sgt Claude L.G. Hood Air Observer age 31 Sgt John Burrow W/Op. aged 18 Sgt Harold Davies R/Gnr aged 20 All ve members of the crew were buried together at All Saint’s Church, Fawley on 21st August 1940, with full military honours. Members of the local community all turned up to pay their respects as well as the families of these young men. from the Marchwood Balloon base was struck, or from one of the other local Balloon bases. e aircra was reported as having 15 feet of wing being severed, which landed 2 miles away.
