A seventies pop song would have you believe that video killed the radio star. It didn’t however as Hythe Pier and Ferry expert Alan Titheridge, was interviewed, live on BBC Radio Northampton on 25th January. Local presenter Bernie Keith talked with Alan during his mid-morning show about the Hythe Pier train in ‘Wheel Nuts’, a segment about all things mechanical and automotive. e station picked up the story about the forthcoming centenary, with Alan relaying the history of the train and its contribution to the Hythe Ferry operation. Hythe Pier Heritage Association will be staging a centenary celebration on 23rd and 24th July which will include the popular annual music festival Rock the Pier, this year renamed ‘Rock the Train’ to mark the 100 years since the introduction of the train on Hythe Pier in July 1922. Further information will be released shortly. Alan’s book ‘ e Heartbeat of Hythe – e Story of Barry’s Community Farm, in Frost Lane, Hythe is in desperate need of slabs! e farm, which is run purely on a voluntary basis, is looking to update some of the farm facilities and needs to expand the donkey’s hardstanding area. As one of the volunteers I see rst- hand how much dedication, time, love and commitment Barry and the other volunteers put into caring for the animals and we are looking to secure the farm for future generations to enjoy. So, over the next 12 months I will be calling on the wonderful Herald community to see if we can help Barry achieve his goal. So, in this edition it’s slabs! Do you have any spare slabs, lying around gathering moss? If so, perhaps you would consider donating them? If you are unable to drop them o to the farm, then please email me on: donnahead@ herald-publishing.co.uk or pop by the Herald o ce and I will arrange collection. still selling well and available from the Herald O ce, the Hythe Pier Ticket O ce, Blissful Gi s in Hythe’s Pylewell Precinct, Ceratopia Books at: ceratopiabooks. co.uk or direct from Alan himself.
