It reminds me of a story that will resonate I am sure with many of you. A few years ago, I was on a scouting trip in the area of Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe is situated in tropical South Central Africa, between the mighty Limpopo and Zambezi rivers - a country about three times the size of England. I was in the Victoria Falls Hotel, a magni cent hotel by any standard. Part of our very detailed scouting procedure is to review all the guest information provided in the rooms. As I perused the information, I was entranced by the beautifully documented history of the hotel, built in 1904 by the British, and initially built as accommodation for workers on the Cape to Cairo railway line! As I scanned the colourful list of events, the following caught my eye “1948 - Imperial Airways started the Solent Flying Boat Service from England to South Africa. The stop on the Zambezi River was affectionately nicknamed the ‘Jungle Junction’ where the passengers would disembark to spend a night at the The Victoria Falls Hotel”. is is an incredible story and chapter of British history that Southampton Water, the Waterside and Hythe are right at the heart of. ere I was in the middle of Africa reading about the Solent! Attention to detail matters. is hotel has Original Victoria Falls Hotel artwork by ‘Larry Norton’ and inset photograph of Imperial Airways Short S.23 Empire “Caledonian” G-ADHM which started services to South Africa in June 1937 - credit to: hampshireairfields.co.uk now become a favourite stop for many of our guests.
