Elizabeth had been brutally murdered in the lane adjoining Covey’s eld in Fawley. She was born Elizabeth Lee in the village of Fawley in Hampshire and christened in All Saints’ Written by Patricia Hedley-Goddard, Churchyard Archivist for the ancient parish church of All Saints’, Fawley Church on 5th December 1761. She married Nicolas Noyce who was 12 years older than her, on 10th February 1791. ey had a son called George and he became a carpenter, residing in Fawley. Nicolas died in 1809 aged 60 years. Elizabeth kept a chandler’s shop and was nancially secure. At the time of these sad happenings her 20 year old son George was living with her. is sad ‘Tale’ is about the horri c murder of Elizabeth at the age of 53 years. On Sunday evening, around 11pm on the 10th of July she had said she was going to a house at the other end of the village to look for her son. Her son George was courting a young lady of whom Elizabeth strongly disapproved. Some neighbours, concerned that she had not returned by the early hours of the morning, went to look for her around 2am. ey found her unconscious in a corner of Mr Covey’s eld, which ran alongside the lane she had walked up. Her head was ‘shockingly cut’. She had been hit over the head by a heavy wooden stake which was found nearby. is had knocked her unconscious, and she had been dragged from the lane, which bordered Mr Covey’s eld, through the gate way of the eld and ung into a corner. e violent blow to the back of her head had stunned but not killed her. When she was found, she was laying unconscious on her side, with her face covered with dirt and her nostrils lled with dirt. Elizabeth remained unconscious for several days, but when she regained consciousness, she was able to describe to a magistrate, on three separate occasions, what had happened to her. She said she had heard the footsteps of a man in the lane who came up behind her and hit her violently with a stick or bludgeon of some sort, and then she was dragged into the eld. She did not see the face of her attacker. She con rmed that she had distinctly heard him come out of Mr. Covey’s eld, over the gate and walk behind her. This featured an Anniversary Emblem to mark 50 years since the formation of their club. Hythe and District Inner Wheel was formed in 1971 after the then President of Hythe & Waterside Rotary sent letters to the wives of all his members asking them if they would like to form a local Inner Wheel. A er an initial interest by 11 wives, there were 19 ladies who held their rst meeting on 2nd March 1971 and received their o cial charter in October of that year. Since then, the club has raised many thousands of pounds for local charities and good causes as well as given great support to the local Rotary Club. Inner Susan Parsons receiving the new President’s Collarette from Ray Lewis Wheel nationally is the biggest women’s group in the world and from 2012 no longer restricted membership to those related to a Rotarian.
