ANCIENT EGYPT e Southampton Ancient Egypt Society’s (SAES) next meeting will be on Saturday 16th April for Mark Walker ‘A Real Egyptian Temple? - e Iseum at Pompeii.’ e Temple of Isis at Pompeii was both destroyed and preserved by the famous eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE. Its discovery in 1764 caused a sensation providing an insight into two lost ancient civilisations, Rome and Egypt. Recently the Naples Archaeological Museum described it as ‘a real Egyptian temple’ but how accurate is this description? Mark hopes to answer this question by comparing the Pompeii Iseum with contemporary temples of Isis in Egypt that were active in the First Century CE.
