Hythe Spiritualist Church Independent Totton Easter Church Services Home-Start New Forest by Clare Collins, Home-Start Family & Group Coordinator e New Forest Group support started less than a year ago but has already been successful in helping and supporting families coming out of lockdown, helping to socially network and signpost families as we all continue to adapt to the changes in restrictions. Back in April 2021 we were just starting to come out of a three month lockdown, the third and nal of a very di cult year. e restrictions at the time placed a cap on the number that could meet. Support had only been by telephone and there was growing concerns about the welfare and mental-health of families. Funding was available to o er group support but with restrictions still in place this was tricky. e answer was a weekly walking wellness group at Rhine eld Ornamental Drive. It was really interesting to chat and discover what life had thrown at the families over the past year. Two of the families were new to the area during lockdown. ey had no family in the country, when they gave birth, Fathers had to wait in the car until the nal stages, to be rung on their mobiles to dash in for the delivery. No visitors were allowed on the ward. is understandably had a massive impact on the families mental health. Many of the families felt isolated and lonely with no-one able to visit and meet their new addition and only Zoom or video calling options. rough sharing their experiences together, talking and meet each other the families said that the group had: “Made me more confident to get out of the house” also it had “helped me to meet other Mums in a similar situation”. Home- Start was delighted to support these families and o ers a range of support across the New Forest. We are always keen to hear from new volunteers. For families that need support via a group, Totton Library on Wednesdays 9.30am to 11am . For further information email: info@hshants.org.uk or call the main switchboard on: 0330 124 2095.
