It was agreed to keep the March meeting as our AGM and invite a speaker for the second half. Our club has survived the pandemic with a healthy bank balance, however, we are desperate for committee members – we are a friendly group who meet 3 to 4 times a year with all home comforts and all share a passion for owers and people. Our lovely treasurer has booked a coach for the 9th September 2022 for Wisley Gardens for £20 each, payable upon booking, rst come rst served! Gill Pelton gave us the most fascinating and nostalgic presentation on ‘Homes and Gardens of 1920s/30’s’. e information and details she gave us was beyond exceptional and we were totally entranced and absorbed in a trip down memory lane – whether great grandparents or parents. Gill covered this period between the two world wars. Some of her highlights were: women had taken men’s jobs and weren’t keen to give them back; 1928 women were given the right to vote; fashion changed – girdles o , hair chopped; brief period of opulence – travel, hotels, jazz music, culture; building boom and an increase in home ownership with timber decoration (art deco: Tudor, Georgian in uence); plumbing, electric and gas were installed in homes; there were bathrooms and kitchens that were functional and fashionable depending on wealth; gadgets for housework; radios to entertain families; Bakelite ‘plastic’, malleable, spread everywhere – radios, telephones, light ttings, door handles, cookware; linoleum ooring and bright rugs; gardens were relished and became hobbies as well as functional – leisure industry and magazines, owers were grown and Constance Spry arranged them using crushed chicken wire as mechanics – foam free – how we have come full circle! Anne Lamplu arranged owers in vases – again foam free. ere were many other treasures of historical information Gill gave us and we were truly grateful to Gill for her fabulous presentation with props to bring it to life! Please consider joining our ower and friendship group. We aren’t a NAFAS group, but our chairman is.
