Waterside Bowls Club, Holbury, Southampton, S045 2PH. Fawley U16’s Win Hampshire Plate Competition In a Hampshire RFU Cup campaign lasting 8 games, 6 of those away and with games in 4 counties travelling a total of 550 miles, Fawley RFC won the Hampshire Plate with a narrow 14-12 win over a spirited and determined Portsmouth RFC side. Recent encounters between these two sides have been close a airs and this continued in the nal. On a muddy heavy pitch the rst half was a tight game with Portsmouth dominating the early possession. Some solid defending from Fawley kept Portsmouth at bay with a couple of chances held up over the try line. It was then the turn of Fawley to exert some pressure on the Portsmouth try line however once again some last ditch defending from the opposition kept them at bay. e deadlock was nally broken when the Portsmouth backs found some space and converted in the corner. A di cult conversion was missed which in the end proved to be the di erence. In a physical 1st half the score was 5-0 to Portsmouth. e e ort put in by the fawley players was epitomised by Josh Huckin who dislocated his nger only to have it put back in and insist on returning four minutes later. e second half started much the same as the rst with exchanges of possession between each side meet with some crunching tackles and last ditch defending. Again both teams had chances held up over the try line but neither could get a foothold on the game for very long. A er a short period of good attacking play in the Fawley 22 Portsmouth scored again this time converting to make the score 12-0 to Portsmouth. With only two defeats all year the Fawley players could have let their heads drop, however roared on by parents, rst team players and committee members who had come to support the backs started to grab a little control of the game. With the forwards working tirelessly to retain the ball ruck a er ruck a free owing move down the right hand side was converted by Anton Vavtar on the wing. e conversion was made by Jake Clark and Fawley had a foothold back in the game 12-7. e score gave Fawley some impetus which was meet with some equally dogged defending by Portsmouth. With some great tactical kicking from Jake Clark and Tom Hogben at 10 and 12 and with both teams tiring from the e ort so far Fawley worked the ball out to the le hand side and the opposite winger Henry Hewett- Curl touched down in the corner tying the scores. e conversion was slotted home by Jake Clark and for the rst time in the game Fawley took the lead. Portsmouths heads certainly didn’t drop and they came roaring back putting Fawley under a period of sustained pressure. With one try attempt held up and one disallowed it was a nervy nal ten minutes for the Fawley supporters. With the last bit of e ort and some long kicks keeping Portsmouth pinned back their attack was kept at bay and Fawley kicked out from their own scrum to win. e game was a monumental e ort by both squads, brutal defending at times with 100% commitment by all the players Fawley were happy to scrap to a win against their most di cult and well matched opponents of the year. With a few of the squad leaving for colleges and rugby scholarships at the end of the season it was a tting end for a bunch of players who have been a pleasure to coach and have grown into a tight knit bunch of friends.
