He is buried in the same plot as Alice Pettit who died on 24th May 1919 aged 75. John was born into a prosperous family on 17th February 1861, in Amesbury, England. His father was Captain Philip John Pinckney who had served in the 6th Dragoon Guards. He (the father) had seen service in the Crimea War with the Carabineers, the siege of Sebastopol, and was with the Light Cavalry Brigade at Eupatoria. He then arrived in India during the Mutiny, where his bravery won him a medal. In 1858 he retired from military service, aged 26, and returned to his home in Wiltshire. e previous October he had married Emma (nee Reilly) and in the 1861 census he was listed as being head of the household in a private house called Milston House, Milston, Amesbury, in Wiltshire. Captain Philip John and Emma raised three children, and their son, Philip John junior, was born in 1861. Interestingly, from then on, Captain Philip’s occupation was recorded as being ‘Interest of Money’, plus in 1881 he was recorded as being a farmer, with 1,100 acres, 18 men and 3 boys. By 1891 he was living on his own means, but ten years later he was recorded as being a Fruit Grower. He died on the 12th of August 1904 in Guernsey and is buried in the Foulon Cemetery, St. Peter Port, Channel Island. At the time of the birth of his son in 1861, the census shows that the household consisted of the parents, Captain Philip John and Emma, Philip John (junior), his elder sister Frances and 4 servants. In 1867 his younger sister Evelyn was born. Philip John (the son) trained to become a civil engineer and at the age of 20 was living in an apartment in 65 Regent Street, London.
