Having been deconstructed for inspection, it was found that much of the original timber was in poor condition and has had to be replaced although any that was reusable has been retained. Reconstruction is now taking place in the Blue Funnel Ferries workshop with the roof being reattached to new side frames. All of the original seating and the doors will be returned once thoroughly cleaned, re-stained and repainted. e carriage arrived at Hythe at the beginning of July 1922. Along with the rst carriage restored by HPHA last year it entered service when the Hythe Pier Railway was introduced onto the Pier at the end of July. e railway has been central to life in Hythe for 100 years, operating almost continuously and is recorded in the Guinness Book of Records as being the world’s oldest continuously operating electric pier train.
