In early summer 2021 and feeling like I needed to clear my mind, along with a new playlist and my trusty four-legged companion, I dutifully ran a couple of times a week, but due to a niggling hip injury (that was my excuse anyway!), I hit the same wall. I felt like the dreaded ve minute run was becoming my nemesis. Over the following months, I kept making excuses to myself, even though my hip was better; I haven’t got the time, it’s too wet/dark/cold/not feeling 100%. Running was once again put to the back of my mind. Fast forward to January, I spotted a social media post for a free, 10 week, beginners running course, organised by the Hardley Runners and their England Athletics quali ed Run Leaders, who volunteer their time and experience and are there to o er friendly advice and that all important support and motivation. So, on a pleasant Monday evening in March, I turned up just a er 6pm and was warmly greeted by Chris, one of the leaders. As the start time approached more and more friendly faces appeared, some like me; who were keen to get back to running or complete beginners and also members of Hardley Runners who were just there to support us novices. eir course is slightly di erent from the ‘Couch to 5K’ app and the Leaders tell us we should nd it easier. We started with a warm up followed by eight, one minute runs with ninety seconds of walking intervals, at every step of the way I had one of the experienced runners alongside me, there was always someone at the back cheering everyone on and making sure no-one was le behind. I realised straight away that my lack of motivation was not having others to talk to and encourage me. At the end of the run, we were guided through some stretching exercises. e whole session lasted around an hour and I was back home for tea while it was still light, but not before organising a ‘homework’ run with three, fellow novices before next weeks’ session. By the time this is in print, we should be running for four minutes and at the end of the ten weeks, we should all be able to comfortably run for thirty minutes (approx. 5km/3.1 miles) – I’ll keep you posted! Visit the Hardley Runners website: www. hardleyrunners.co.uk to nd out more information and see when they are planning their next beginners course. If you are already an established runner, why not look in to joining the club, they are such a friendly group. We provide training, races and social runs for all running abilities, from those that want to win, to those that want fitness, fun and friendship.
