So it was very appropriate that the subject for the March meeting of Beaulieu Horticultural Society was ‘A Year in the Vegetable Garden’. e speaker, John Trim, is a very experienced judge of vegetables, including assessing vegetables’ performance at the Royal Horticultural Society trial gardens at Wisley. On his local allotment and most especially in his large greenhouse, John grows prize winning vegetables and during his very informative talk John gave members many useful growing tips. John’s vegetable growing year, in fact, begins in October when he plants garlic and broad beans, whilst still picking tomatoes in his greenhouse. Month by month they learnt the best vegetable varieties to grow, he suggested the F1 varieties of tomatoes and seed potatoes from Scotland as being better able to withstand disease, and when and how to sow the seeds and grow them on. ey had useful advice on the best composts and fertilisers to use and how to make and use their own comfrey feed. John’s inspiring talk was a timely reminder of just how many wonderful vegetables can be grown in your own gardens. If you are not able to grow your own, you can support farm shops and farmers’ markets selling local produce. On Monday 25th April at 7.30pm in Beaulieu Village Hall for a talk titled ‘New Forest Bees’. On Saturday 14th May at 11am in East Boldre Village Hall for a Plant Sale and Co ee Morning. On Monday 16th M ay at 7.30pm in Beaulieu Village Hall for a talk titled ‘Pelargoniums’ by Roger Butler. Visitors are welcome to talks (£2). New members are welcome (£9 per annum).
