In 2019 apetito won the Queens Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development and the 100% sourcing of its sh and meat through British Hythe Pier Railway Centenary Celebration Hythe Pier Heritage Association (HPHA) can reveal some of the plans for its celebration of the centenary of the Hythe Pier Railway to take place over the weekend of 23rd and 24th July . e narrow-gauge railway has been trundling along the 700 yards long pier since July 1922. HPHA will combine the celebration with its annual music festival ‘Rock the Pier’ which will be staged on the Promenade behind Hythe’s High Street, commencing at 12.45pm and running until 7.30pm. e festival showcases local musicians with the Trav Cats, Wire J-D, MagiKats, REMbrandt, When Harri met Alli and the Soulcatchers all booked to perform. ‘Rock the Pier’ is now rmly established in the Hythe social calendar, raising vital funds for the restoration of the pier and railway. e Centenary Celebration will start at 11am and will include the cutting of a birthday cake. HPHA, in conjunction with volunteers from the Hythe Shed (at the Pier) and engineers from Blue Funnel Ferries have been restoring a second carriage which is on course to be back on track along with the rst restored in 2021 and the rst of the restored Brush locomotives. e carriages date from 1922, whilst the locomotive started out in life at a munitions factory in 1917. Entry will be free but HPHA volunteers will be on hand to collect donations. Other heritage railway associations will be present in the village, including the Volk’s Electric Railway from Brighton, which opened in 1883 and is the world’s oldest continuously running electric railway. e Hythe Pier Railway is the world’s oldest continuously running electric railway on a pier. e Hythe Shed (at the Pier) will be open both days with information, displays, models and heritage items on display, volunteers will be on hand to inform visitors of what the members do to support the restoration of the train. Model railway layouts will be exhibited at the Shed on Sunday 24th July .
