Between 1945 and 1950, Beaulieu Air eld was being used by the Airborne Forces Experimental Establishment (AFEE). e AFEE were researching and developing new methods of delivering soldiers and equipment into battle. Aircra would take o from the air eld multiple times a day to release teams of paras over Hatchet Pond. e men would oat down and land on Bagshot Moor on the East Boldre side of the road that runs from the pond to Lymington. e AFEE also dropped various items that might be useful in battle. ese included motorbikes, bicycles, jeeps, and guns from di erent types of aircra , all attached to parachutes. ey even once dropped a bulldozer from the sky. It didn’t always go to plan though. In these photos taken by Ron Whatley you can see where a parachuted jeep ew o course and crashed into the roof of a Beaulieu Air eld building. More stories like this will be shown at the RAF Beaulieu at East Boldre Village Hall, SO42 7WD. Entrance is just £1, and kids go free. ere will also be a quiz for kids with a prize at the end.
