I sent the children a video asking them if they could help me to nd out about Sir Christopher Cockrell, Florence Nightingale and T.E Lawrence, why they were so important and what their connection is to the local area. e children only had a week to do their research and I was invited to come into the school to take a look at their work at the end of their project. I was greeted by a mini museum set up in the hall with an area for each of the three famous people, displaying pages of beautifully hand written facts and timelines as well as fabulous sketched portraits. I was guided to the Sir Christopher Cockrell stand where mini curators from the Mangoes class told me all about his life; he was born in Cambridge and studied at University there, later he lived in Hythe in the pink house by Prospect Place and was famous for inventing the hovercra using two cans and a hoover for his prototype! He used the water behind e Grove to test out his rst hovercra named SR.N1 where you can nd a memorial for him. He was later knighted by the Queen. Next I was introduced to some of the Pineapples class; they had researched T.E. Lawrence. e curators of this exhibition explained that he is better known as Lawrence of Arabia because he had helped the Arabs in their ght against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War. ey told me that he had wanted to join the army from an early age but was originally turned down for being too short! He eventually succeeded and became an army o cer. He was were su ering. e children told me all about the horri c state of the hospitals there and how Florence had helped to clean them up. ey told me that she later set up a training school for nurses in London and is famous for making nursing a profession. ey also told me that when she died she was buried at St Margaret’s of Antioch in Wellow. At the end of my tour I was challenged by the Mangoes and their teacher Mr Bowie to play a timeline game to see if I could remember all the facts they had told me about Sir Christopher Cockerell – the children gave me a few little pointers to help me complete the challenge! I was so impressed by the work that the children had put into their projects, their enthusiasm was infectious and the level of knowledge that they had learnt and retained within such a short space of time was incredible – they are a testament to their teachers! I was joined by Head Teacher Jane West she said how immensely proud she was of the children and how well they had risen to the challenge in such a short amount of time. Sir Christopher Cockerell curators and their display Year 2 pupils with Herald Editor, Sarah Bartlett also an archaeologist and during his life he lived in a house in Hythe which now has a plaque. e children went on to tell me that T.E Lawrence sadly died at the age of 46 in a motorbike accident. Finally the Strawberries class curators told me all about Florence Nightingale; they told me that she grew up near Romsey in a big house called Embley Park which is now a private school. She came from a very wealthy family who were not impressed when she decided to go over to Crimea to help those who
