A temporary platform has recently been set up further up the pier to allow for work to take place on the current platform which is in desperate need of repair. Engineers will be working on laying new points and track as well as building a brand new platform for passengers to alight the train to take them to the ferry. A comprehensive survey and re-design of the existing points area has already been carried out, as has the procurement and fabrication of the new rails and the replacement timber for a new support system. ere will be a pause during the project before the track can be removed in order to allow Carriage No.1 being restored in the workshop to re-enter service. The existing track, conductor rail and points will be li ed along with the existing timber supports. Once the replacement supports are in place, the installation of the new track, turn- out and points will follow using upgraded railway line, steel sleepers and sprung rail clips. The existing bumper stop will be relocated and the conductor rail installed with upgraded support clamps. Work will conclude with the renovation/replacement of the present station platform before the commissioning of the new system and points. e work is able to take place thanks to the Hythe Pier Heritage Association (HPHA) securing funding from donors including Hampshire County Council (optional “Leader’s Community Grant Fund”), Beaulieu Beaufort Foundation, Beaverbrook Foundation, Dibden Allotment Fund and the New Forest Park Authority. HPHA would like to thank them for their generous donations. 2022 marks the centenary of the Hythe Pier Train and it is hoped that the new platform will be completed by late August. HPHA continue to protect, preserve, restore and redevelop the pier, associated buildings and the unique railway for public bene t. Despite the di cult times brought about by the pandemic over the past two years, HPHA have restored the railway carriage and tractor unit and has carried out urgent protection and repair work on the pier head buildings. ere is still much to do, with the volunteers working tirelessly to secure the necessary funding.
