Julia Baker, a volunteer from Furzey Gardens and Ian a Trustee of the Minstead Trust gave a fascinating presentation. Minstead Trust nurtures and supports people with learning disabilities to enable them to achieve greater independence within society. Furzey Gardens is an important support to them. e people develop skills and do tasks within the gardens and learn simple hospitality and baking for the Cafe. e highlight for the Trust and the Gardens was when they entered their Show Garden at Chelsea in 2013 winning gold! e Show Garden was subsequently replicated within Furzey Gardens. Locally Furzey (another name for gorse) Gardens is thought of as a secret garden within the Forest, tucked behind Minstead – once found, never forgotten. e gardens have many rare specimens dating back to botanists Williams and George Forrest Kingdom Ward- nanced by local, wealthy landowners in their searches for new world discoveries - China, Japan, Nepal – Rhododendrons, Camellia, Primula and Magnolias. ere was a close connection between Furzey and Bartley, where once thrived the prestigious Bartley Nursery, which brought new species for example Camellia Williamsii Bartley No 5 and Narcissi Bartley. Julia and Ian brought a selection of plants, ceramics, woodcra produced by the students for people to purchase. On ShowNight members bring their own arrangements, this year’s theme of ‘Celebration’ encouraged a beautiful array. Money is placed in front of your favourite and the person with the most wins a trophy. e money collected goes to local charities.
