Fans of Patricia Hedley-Goddard’s Tales from the Graveyard regularly featured in the Herald can now purchase her new book: Tales from the Graveyard of All Saints Church Fawley. Over the last 4 years Patricia has been the Graveyard Archivist for the beautiful old church of All Saints, Fawley. She began writing the ‘Tales from the Graveyard’ at the beginning of the lockdown when the church was totally isolated, by writing up the stories Patricia hoped to keep its existence in the conscience of the local public. Patricia comments: “ There are well over 4000 recorded burials/interments within the graveyard, many of which have disappeared without trace. Every grave is the resting place of someone who once lived within this community, and helped to make the Parish of Fawley what it is today. When people realised what I was doing, I had a lot of encouragement from local people, and many of the ‘Tales’ are through their generosity of being willing, or requesting me to record these snapshots in time. The only criteria these Tales had to fulfil was that the deceased person had to be buried within the graveyard or be recorded on one of the memorials situated within the church.” Patricia’s book contains a fascinating Tales from the Graveyard Book Now On Sale! Georgeson had been on a visit to Lee-on-Solent. ere was no need for Georgeson to have dived over Calshot. It was not part of his ordinary routine, and the witness thought he probably did it to say good-bye. A look-out who saw the crash, said that there was a haze, and at 2000 the surface of the sea would be almost invisible. He thought that the pilot suddenly saw it and attened out. Doing that at a great speed would impose a heavy strain on the wings, and something in the bracing must have collapsed. e coroner, expressing the opinion that the accident was due to an error of judgement on the pilot’s part, and recorded the jury’s verdict of ‘Death frommisadventure’. e funeral was held at the Church of St. George, Calshot, the church of the RAF base, and the burial followed at All Saint’s churchyard, Fawley. e burial was held with full military honours and an RAF band was present e ‘Last Post’ was sounded at the graveside, and the ring party red a volley. Mr. Macdonald, a relative of the deceased, was present, as well as Mr Broadbridge, from London on behalf of the High Commissioner for New Zealand. e British Legion was also represented.
