All this within a supportive and encouraging environment, giving the specialist attention not always available in the hustle and bustle of the wider world. e proceeds from the Nursery sales (annual and perennial plants, hanging baskets, woodwork and kindling) and the open days make a vital contribution to the running costs of the project. ey would not be able to continue this project without the support of the local and wider community who buy their products and also support them in numerous other ways. e next Open Days are taking place on Sunday 26th June, 31st July and 11th September from 10.30am–3.30pm. Booking o ce sta looking at CCTV real time images noticed smoke rising from the decking, prompting immediate action. e train was dispatched to the scene armed as always with a re bucket secured with a length of rope. e crew lowered the bucket over the side of the pier to collect sea water to douse the smouldering planks. In total, the bucket needed to be lled 12 times to fully extinguish the smouldering planks. A smoking ban on both the pier and train as well as the ferry boats has been in place since the early 1990s, however sta are frequently having to remind patrons of the dangers of lighting up. Decking boards can get tinder dry, particularly in the summer months, a recipe for potential disaster if subjected to a discarded cigarette, the cause of this latest incident. Blue Funnel Ferries, operators of the Hythe ferry, Hythe Pier and its iconic Railway would like to remind the public that the no smoking rule must be adhered to. Recent fire damage
