Mottisfont in Romsey is home to one of the most famous rose gardens in the world with over 500 varieties of rose in bloom in June and very early July. Unlike modern species, old-fashioned roses tend to ower just once a year, so the full summer blooming of this National Collection is an extraordinary annual sight, and the fragrance and colour is simply unsurpassable. is year, the gardens are open until 8pm from Mondays to Saturdays, until 2nd July. An early evening visit is a special treat, when the gardens are a little quieter and the heady scent of the roses is at its peak. Many of the roses growing there are available you to the many di erent rose varieties planted there by Ralph Dutton and Hinton’s garden team over the years. Roses are a big summer highlight at Hinton, with over 90 varieties on show. e collection is well known for its repeat owering, giving delicious fragrance and colour throughout June and July. Quantum eatre will be at Hinton Ampner on Thursday 11th August for an outdoor theatre production of e Tale of Peter Rabbit , Michael Whitmore’s charming adaptation will have you spellbound - a magical evening of fun for all the family. Waterside Art Group will be holding a painting demonstration of a portrait in oils by Southampton artist Stewart Beckett on Tuesday 28th June at 7.30pm in Hythe and Dibden Community Centre o Jones Lane in Hythe. Whatever medium you paint or draw in, most art principles apply equally so do accept their invitation to go along to this event. As always, visitors will be warmly welcomed for the fee of £4. Stewart’s work has been exhibited at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and in other galleries. He has been selected as a contestant on Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year and Sky Landscape Artist of the Year. Rose arches in June at Mottisfont for sale too, so everyone can take away a little of its scented magic. Mottisfont opens from 10am-8pm (last entry 7pm) on Mondays-Saturdays until Saturday 2nd July (closing at 5pm on Sundays). e house is closed until 3rd July.
