Set up by Master Colin Graves in 1992, Waterside Taekwondo Club is now one of the UKs leading Taekwondo Clubs o ering dedicated classes for all ages and abilities with clubs in Holbury, Netley, Totton and Redbridge covering the Waterside and Southampton. Master Colin rst became interested in Taekwondo when he was 18, a er his brother Keith and friend Doug showed him some of the moves they had learnt at the Southampton City Club and he soon became addicted to the sport. He soon gained respect as he was pretty fast and started to enter local and national competitions including winning the British National Championships and taking part in two sparring World Championships for Great Britain. A er 7 years of doing Taekwondo, following his own success, and with encouragement from others, Master Graves decided to open his rst class. With the help of Master Sean Neill, Master Kevin and Carolyn Westbrook the club has gone from strength to strength and Master Graves had now been teaching Taekwondo full time for 10 years. Some of his students have gone on to achieve great things including Lily and Poppy Kingsley, Lily is now ranked number 2 in the World and Poppy has recently won the Swedish Open. Master Colin opened his own Dojang three years ago which saw the club boom in numbers, despite the pandemic which saw sessions taking place over Zoom and proved a big success. Master Colin Graves comments: “What I love about teaching back then and now is watching the progress students have made over the years. It’s your lesson planning and drive that has helped these guys achieve something special in their lives.” Waterside Taekwondo Club works closely with British Taekwondo and other clubs which enables them to take part in events and seminars Nationwide, most recently their Poomsae team attended Grandmaster Shin Byeong Hyun’s Seminar. e club now o er a variety of classes including Tiny Tigers, Family Traditional, Sports Sparring and Li and Fit and are now doing instructor coaching courses. Local hairdressing legend, Ron E emey, of Ron the Barbers is celebrating 60 years of hairdressing! In 1962, aged just 15, Ron started as an apprentice under a gentleman called Tom Joli e, he didn’t like school and fell into the hairdressing profession where he has remained over the last 60 years! In 1966 Ron started working at True Trims in the Precinct in Hythe and then rented a chair at John’s Barbers in Holbury, where NatWest bank used to be, before buying his rst barbers shop – Ron the Barbers next to Beyond the Fringe in Hythe. He had many happy times working alongside colleeagues that he loved. Later in 1992 Ron went into business with his son Karl in Black eld along Hampton Lane and they have recently moved across the road to a new modern shop with Karl taking over the running of the business. Ron remains a celebrity in the local area not only for his skills as a barber but also for all the wonderful charity projects that he has taken part in and raised money for including being a big advocate in One of Ron’s charity events the Waterside bed push, and raising lots of money for the old maternity unit at Hythe Hospital shaving o the long hair of a local publican! Ron still loves to be the heart of the local community socially, even to just wave to those as they go by and as for barbering how long will he continue? Barbering is in his blood and even though doing reduced hours, years of being up at the crack of dawn to t in shi workers over years gone by is still with him and he is still up early to see some veterans who are also in the same pattern!
