Sir Ronald’s brilliant linguistic skills had not gone unnoticed by President Salazar of Portugal. In 1943 President Salazar requested Sir Ronald to give him French conversation lessons to enable him to understand what was being said. Sir Ronald was instructed to enter the Presidential Palace by the back door to avoid all the o cial bureaucracy at the front entrance. President Salazar and Sir Ronald would partake of a ernoon tea while receiving instruction in the French language. Lisbon being a ‘hotbed’ of spies and plots, Sir Ronald was in a position to receive information from his colleagues. He became aware of a plot to blow up the air elds on the Azores, and the name of the leader of the plot. He was able to inform President Salazar and the guilty person was deported, saving the important strategic airbases. President Salazar said ‘you have been a true friend to Portugal’ and a er negotiation by Sir Ronald, he granted the Allies access to the non-military air base on the Azores. is had a signi cant improvement to the lives of the pilots in the Battle of the North Atlantic, as it cut down the loss of pilot lives. His grand-daughter, Lady Lucy Pelham, told me that Sir Ronald was also a fantastic carpenter. When he retired, he built a complete parquet oor, cutting each block himself. Sir Ronald died in 1953, never telling his family about the heroic role that he performed during WW2. Campbell’s work is featured in the ‘Visas for Life Exhibition’. Throughout Europe diplomats saved 250,000 Jewish lives. e most famous operation was by German Industrialist Oskar Schindler. My very grateful thanks to Lady Lucy Pelham, Sir Ronald’s granddaughter, for sharing this ‘Tale’ with me and giving some personal details not found in official documents.
