Prior to its inception at the end of July 1922, ferry passengers had to walk the 640 metre long pier to reach the boats to Southampton. omas Percy, then owner of the boats and the pier, spotted the locomotives that had been built for use in First World War munitions factories, in a post-war redundant plant catalogue, thinking them ideal for a pier tramway. He put in a bid at the end of 1919; two and a half years later, under the guidance of railway engineer Gerald Yorke, they were propelling subsequently procured bespoke carriages carrying grateful ferry passengers and pier promenaders alike. Organised by the Hythe Pier Heritage Association (HPHA), the celebrations kicked o with a short ceremony conducted by HPHA chairman Anthony Smith during which the 16307 locomotive arrived and was brought to a standstill no more than an inch from its visiting sibling locomotive 16303 (as detailed in the 427 Herald). A birthday cake was cut to a rendition of “Happy Birthday”. Shortly a er the Promenade came to life with the start of Rock the Train entertaining the crowds brightening up the event. As well as the musical entertainment visitors had the opportunity to ride the pier train and visit exhibitions featuring historic Hythe Pier and Ferry artefacts as well as exhibits from the world’s oldest electric railway - Volks Electric Railway in Brighton and the Romsey Signal Box. Romsey & District Railway Modellers Society also set up an exhibition of working model railway layouts at the Community Centre. Vintage vehicles from the National Motor Museum in Beaulieu including a fuel tanker and a charabanc were also on display at the foot of the pier along with the Waterside Christmas Fire Engine.
