Dahlias flower from mid-July, right through to the rst frost, which in some areas can be up until the beginning of November. ere are so many colour variations, some of the two toned colours look as if they have been created by an artist with great dedication, many di erent size and shape blooms, some as large as dinner plates right down to the small pom dahlias. In recent years the dahlia has become popular in gardens to attract bees, especially the single petal varieties where the pollen is on show from the minute the bud opens up. Gilbert’s Nursery, which also has a tearoom serving freshly prepared food, delicious cakes and cream teas, is open Tuesday to Saturday from 9am until 5pm, Sunday 10am until 4pm, and is closed Mondays, except Bank Holidays. e eld is open the same time as the nursery however the eld will be closed 30 minutes before the nursery closes. President Henley welcomed the members by reminding them that on this very day in 1899, Ernest Hemmingway was born. Henley also welcomed two representatives from the Ashurst Probus Club. Henley also clari ed that during his earlier Vodka tester, this was only a minor consultancy. Low membership numbers are still a concern. Henley encouraged members to use personal contacts in potentially recruiting new members, and distributed helpful guidelines. Potential events for the Club were: Co ee morning at the Royal Southampton Yacht Club, Lunch at MJs (Brockenhurst College), Tour of ExxonMobil Petrochemical Plant, Visit to Calshot Lifeboat Station with Co ee at Calshot Café and Tour on New Forest Bus from Hythe to Fordingbridge via a bus change Lyndhurst, with lunch in Fordingbridge (display of a council Tax bill, provides discount). e meeting continued with a very informative illustrated talk by Hazel Fotheringham, from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight trust. e Trust is now 60 years old, with a membership of around 27,000 members, (many of whom volunteer in supporting the Trust). Currently there are some 65 wild life sites across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, representing a total of 2,300 hectares. Since Brexit, the Trust has lost the European Protection and Support for its sites, which is giving some concerns. e current aim of the Trust is to maximise ‘Wilding’ within the County, and Hazel showed many examples where this had been successful. Other activities by the Trust is to maximise removal of non native invasive plants, support the introduction of new species, such as: beavers, choughs, pine martins, and work with local Farmers & Land owners to encourage ‘Wilding’ and organic practices. e planned topic for the August meeting is Nordic Mythology.
