With over 280,000 people across the region diagnosed with high blood pressure, healthcare professionals are calling for more people to be aware of their numbers and reduce their risk of heart attack and stroke Around one in three UK adults have high blood pressure and an estimated six million people in the UK are yet to be diagnosed, however many remain unaware of the risk it poses because there are o en no symptoms, until they become very unwell. ‘Know Your Numbers Week’, an annual awareness initiative by Blood Pressure UK that took place in September as a reminder for people about the importance of managing blood pressure and encouraging people to get their blood pressure checked. High blood pressure can lead to an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes, so NHS professionals across Hampshire and Isle of Wight used the occasion to encourage people to get tested and be more blood pressure aware. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the leading causes of death in England and getting tested regularly could help save lives and reduce the number of people having strokes and heart attacks. It’s recommended that all adults over 40 years of age have their blood pressure tested at least every ve years so any potential problems can be detected early. It is free and easy to get tested with many community pharmacies, health hubs and GP surgeries o ering it as a service. Many community pharmacies in the area now o er blood pressure checks. Many patients also have or know someone who has a home blood pressure testing kit, so these can also be used to help you keep track of levels. Dr Rory Honney, a GP working with Hampshire and Isle of Wight Integrated Care System, said: “Blood pressure is known as a ‘silent killer’ due to the fact it rarely presents with symptoms other than a heart attack or stroke for which it is a key risk factor. I would like to encourage everyone over 40 to use the opportunity of Blood Pressure UK’s national campaign ‘Know Your Numbers’ as a reminder to go and get your blood pressure checked. Knowing your numbers gives you and your doctor time to address and treat you if you have high blood pressure, and so reduce the risk of heart attack or stroke. It’s also important we continue talking about the risks of high blood pressure all year round and remember these easy to access locations are here to help you live a healthier life for longer.” First UK Childhood Bereavement Charity Marks 30 Years of Support September marked 30 years of childhood bereavement charity Winston’s Wish. As the rst and original charity of its kind Winston’s Wish, paved the way for children’s bereavement services in the UK. e charity have shared their story of how they started and stories of those who’ve been supported by the charity. Founder of Winston’s Wish, Julie Stokes says “30 years ago, we had no idea that we were sowing seeds that would grow and still flourish 30 years later. As a clinical/health psychologist working on palliative care wards, I saw people, including children, overwhelmed by the sadness of being excluded from grown up conversations about the serious illness and death of a parent or sibling. I could see there was nowhere for them to go to for support. The hospital challenging grief work.” e charity initially expected to run one group of twenty- ve children a year, but soon found the amount of young people needing support was far greater and help for all types of bereavement were in demand. Julie commented “Very quickly it was obvious that the numbers of children bereaved from all causes was greater than anticipated, - the demand surged. We were soon running 6 weekends and we tried hard to ensure children experiencing similar types of deaths for example suicide or murder could talk openly with those their own age.” ree decades and thousands of lives touched later, Winston’s Wish is continuing its vital work to ensure no child or young person goes through grief alone. With a digital rst approach the charity has ambitions to support 40,000 young people nationally every year by 2025. In addition to continuing its vital work helping grieving children and the adults supporting them, the charity is also making a promise to bereaved teenagers and young adults to amplify their voices, build a community and a commitment to share their real and unedited experiences of grief.
