Brice was born and raised in the New Forest, growing up, he was always frustrated that there were no books on the mythology and folklore of the Forest, in spite of the fact that he knew it had and has its own culture, traditions and heritage, distinct from the rest of the county. Over a decade ago Brice made the decision to write such a book and has spent endless hours researching and collecting information from medieval charters, newspaper archives, court records, hand written diaries, and history and guidebooks on the New Forest Red and so on, but they’re combined with far more obscure gures, such as the giant ettin Yernagate, who protects the Forest; the enormous, red, antlered Stratford Lyon, who terrorises drunks around the Red Lion pub in Boldre; Lazy Laurence, the shape shi ing pixie who protects orchards and cider; and many, many more besides. stretching back centuries. The book combines grand, broad, lyrical storytelling chapters, with others which talk more about the history of the traditions, and the signi cance behind some of the folklore. ere’s the very famous tales, of course, of King Arthur, Robin Hood, Rufus the e oldest story in the collection is attested in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and dates to just over 1500 years ago. Brice comments: “I believe that the stories and folk culture of an area, inherited and developed organically over generations, are vital to any kind of lasting local identity. Without a real depth of that identity, an area very quickly becomes nowhere, with fewer and fewer people to care or to understand what makes it rare and valuable and worth maintaining. Soon enough it becomes just like anywhere else. The most important thing is that once the story has been told, it belongs to whoever has heard it. It is my sincerest hope with this book that these tales will be passed on, and grown and tended to and harvested, for many more generations to come.” e book published by History Press is now available from e Herald o ce in Hythe priced at £14.99.
