Organised by e Ellis Journey Ltd the event is now in its 3rd year. e event was renamed this year following the suggestion of main organiser, Lawrie Smith, to plant an oak tree on the Beaulieu Estate during the event each year to go a little way to o set their carbon footprint. Lawrie already runs a larger event known as the Ellis Journey which is held on the rst Sunday in July each year in celebration of the rst recorded motorised carriage journey in the UK. Due to covid the Ellis Journey and the Brighton to London veteran car run weren’t able to take place in 2020 and 2021 so Lawrie decided to run a smaller event in the New Forest. Lord Montagu was invited to take part in the rst event and has since become more involved in the event. He could be seen driving one of his cars on the day and later planted the oak tree in the grounds of Palace House. e Ellis Journey Ltd is a not for pro t company, so far this year they have given £1000 to Southampton Magna Rotary Club to go towards the supply of rst aid kits for the troops on the front line in Ukraine, a further £560 has been donated to local charities in Romsey. During their time in Hythe I was asked to pick my favourite vehicle; the winning car was a 1903 orneycro that has recently been fully restored by owner Charlie Brooks. Charlie who was travelling with his 3 children was presented with a copy of Alan Titheridge’s book e Heartbeat of Hythe by Lawrie Smith. Alan himself was on hand at the event to answer any questions the visiting drivers and their passengers had about the pier train and ferry. rough his research into the history of Hythe over the years Alan discovered that a similar line up of vehicles in the ferry yard took place in 1911. A car competition with British and German teams stopped o in Hythe enroute to and from Beaulieu on Sunday 9th July 1911. An excerpt from the Hampshire Independent on Saturday 15th July 1911 states: “At one period of the day there were no less than 80 motor cars inside the gates at Hythe Pier, such a sight had not been seen before witnessed even by the oldest inhabitant.” e next Beaulieu Oak Run is planned for September 2023; the date is still to be con rmed.
