The Southampton and New Forest Group of the Austin A30/A35 Owners’ Club are continuing to boost their membership by inviting potential new members that are owners of any make of classic car, not forgetting those enthusiasts who appreciate them but don’t have one of their own, to go and meet the club members with a view to joining. Members enjoy a friendly, social atmosphere at the monthly meetings. Every meeting includes a ra e. ere are lm nights, quizzes, speakers on various topics and club drive days. Some members have other makes of classic vehicles such as Bedford, Ford, Land Rover, Mercedes, M.G., Morris, Riley, Triumph and Volkswagen enabling the club to expand the range of vehicle manufacturers to complement their A30/35s and other Austin models. Club News e speaker for the evening was club member Ian Abrahams who gave a talk and slide show titled ‘Do You Remember ese Items?’ e products and brands shown on the slides dated from around 1890 to 1930. Items shown would be used by a household starting in the morning and through to night time. e slides and talk produced lively interaction with the group and was enjoyed by all. e images shown highlighted the skills of the artists that produced the advertising to promote the product. e speaker spoke about the amazing collection by Robert Opie at the Museum of Brands which is the home of the ‘Robert Opie Collection’ at Notting Hill, London. Ian Abrahams is also the chairman of the Bitterne Local History Society and it is well worth a visit to the museum. Manufacturers knew from early days that getting right the branding of a product was the road to successful sales and pro t. e picture shows a few examples of the types of advertising materials used to promote products. ere have been many books written about the history of advertising. To round o the evening of nostalgia, the club chairman had compiled a list of early black and white and colour TV programmes which triggered more memories within the group. Some members said they had forgotten some of the programmes listed and that it had been an enjoyable ‘blast from the past’. e club owns Austin Motor Spares Service Ltd which holds, in stock, a large quantity of highly valued items to support customers’ needs. New, used and reconditioned parts are sold by Robert and Rick Prinn who are able to o er comprehensive advice and help. The next scheduled meeting is on Thursday 15th October when the club will hold its AGM followed by a talk titled ‘I do like to be Beside the Seaside.’ Meetings take place on the second ursday of each month, starting 7.30pm, at Netley Marsh Community Hall, Woodlands Road, SO40 7GH. Bramshott Hill Ladies a Step Closer to the Spanish Final Not quite ready to pack their bags just yet but it’s certainly getting nearer as the Bramshott Hill Ladies Annodata team win themselves a place in the last sixteen of this National Matchplay Competition. e Annodata Golf Classic is the club team event of the year. It is also thought to be one of the toughest and most prestigious competitions to win in the UK. Winners of this National Knockout Event will be crowned the UK Golf Club Champions and go on to the nals which will be held in Cadiz. ey have overcome some sti opposition from other Hampshire teams and their win at Worthing Golf Club was another close match resulting in the nal players continuing onto the 19th hole and securing a win.
