At a local level this means that they started their 22 - 23 season in Counties 2 Observing a minutes silence for The Queen Hampshire. e campaign started on 10th September against Ellingham and Ringwood’s 1st XV (E&R). It had been delayed a week and was a reversed xture, because the ground at Newlands Park was still too hard from the long dry spell. In keeping with many sporting events that weekend, a minute’s silence was observed prior to the game by the assembled teams, o cials and spectators in respect for the Queen. E&R took an early lead with a converted try but this did not put Fawley o . It may have taken 10 minutes, but they took 5 points of their own a er forcing an error from the defence. e resultant lineout allowed Fawley to press again across the whole width of the eld with winger Tuirabe nally crossing the line. Unfortunately for Fawley this spurred E&R on, and they put another 17 points on the board before half time with 2 converted tries and a penalty. A er the break, yhalf Rob omas kicked a 20m penalty that came from a ruck infringement by E&R. Fawley hoped this would mean a change in fortunes and it did. ey had now settled into their rst game for 4 months, having not had the opportunity to play any preseason warm up games. A lot of the play through the centre of the eld failed to gain much ground for either team but when omas kicked ahead and E&R’s fullback’s clearance was charged down by Tuirabe, the winger collected the ball to nish an impressive individual e ort. E&R replied with another converted try, closely followed by Fawley’s scrum half Ben Wild wrestling to get the ball down at the other end and earning a valuable 5 points. E&R’s fullback closed the scoring by kicking a 20m penalty with over 10 minutes of play time le . Fawley’s Man of the Match went to Fraser Cockeram playing at wing forward. e result may not have gone Fawley’s way, ending 34-18, but they took heart from their performance with many 1st team players missing and, as a club that they put out a second team on the same day. Stay tuned for further updates from the Senior and Junior sides as we go through the season.
