Staying with the social scene in 1875, this time we’ll visit Count and Countess Batthyany, just down the road at Eaglehurst. Edmund Gustavus, 6th Prince BatthyanyStrattmann, to give him his full title, was the son of a Hungarian nobleman. Born in 1826, he was a noted lover of the sporting life, particularly fond of yacht racing. Plainly the family knew how to throw a good party. In January 1875, the Hampshire Advertiser reports: New Year’s Festivities at Eaglehurst. The close of the old year and the coming in of the new year was celebrated at the seat of the Count and Countess Batthyany by a ball, given to their establishment and the servants of the neighbourhood, the guests numbering around sixty. A bountiful supper was provided by the Count and Countess, great praise being due to Mrs Fisher for the magnificent style in which it was served. Also to Mr Spieshanger and Miss Smith for conducting the same, and for their artistic skill in the decorations. Every effort was made to render all happy and comfortable. Dancing commenced at 10 o’clock, and was kept up with great spirit till a late hour, every one having thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Three cheers were then given for the Count and Countess, and Madame Moselle de Bornemann, and wishing them all a happy new year. This brought a very pleasant entertainment to a close, every one feeling grateful for the kindness they had received. On 29th May, their residence at Eaglehurst, the Count’s steam launch ‘Blunderbuss’, and his sailing yacht ‘Flying Cloud’, moored at Calshot, were all dressed with ags, in honour of the Count’s father’s racehorse winning the Derby at Epsom. In mid-August the same year, the Advertiser records: Garden Party at Eaglehurst. On Saturday the Count and Countess Batthyany gave a garden party on an extensive scale at Eaglehurst. The grounds were tastefully decorated with flags, etc., and the 1st Hants Artillery Volunteers, under Bandmaster Crook, attended, and played a capital selection of music in the afternoon. We may say that the grounds presented a most animated and pleasing appearance, especially when viewed from the Solent, and although these and the castle were not illuminated in the evening, yet the fireworks were of the most brilliant character, exceeding even those of last week. Several fire balloons were also sent up. ere follows a list of over a hundred of the great and good in attendance. Next time, we’ll revisit another of the social occasions in 1875.
