Work to replace the rst 43 metres of the railway track on Hythe Pier began in earnest earlier this month. e project to li the existing track, conductor rail and points along with the existing timber supports began in June when a temporary platform was constructed further along the 640 metres Grade II listed Victorian pier. ere then followed a pause during which a further survey was carried out as the rst of the timber supports were removed. e pause coincided with the Pier Train Centenary celebration, the removal of the second restored carriage from the workshop and the busiest time of the year for the ferry operation. Temporary safety fencing has been positioned alongside the section of line, screening removal of the track and boards. Once removal is complete, replacement supports and the new track and points will be installed. electric pier train will be constructed. e work is essential to protect the iconic narrow gauge railway locomotives and rolling stock and further the longevity of arguably Hythe’s greatest asset. Hythe Pier Heritage Association, which is commissioning the work as a part of its long-term aim to redevelop the pier and railway for public bene t would like to acknowledge the generous donations from Hampshire County Council, Beaulieu Beaufort Foundation, Beaverbrook Foundation, Dibden Allotment Fund and the New Forest Park Authority towards the funding of the project. ere is still much to do, including the restoration of the carriage that carried King George VI along the pier in May 1944, at present underway in the ferry company workshop. If you would like to make a donation towards further renovation of Hythe Pier, please visit hythepier.org.uk/donate.
