It has signi cantly reduced animal road deaths but there is still some way to go. e ponies have been named ‘Winnies’ by the WI as ponies ‘whinny’ and it uses the WI lettering too. e hope is the ponies will act as an educational tool, to show how di cult it is for animals to be seen in the shadows and as an aide memoir so the children will remind the driver to slow down when driving across the New Forest. PCSO Richard Williams said: “We could go out and ticket everyone speeding but we have found that educating speeding drivers travelling just over the 40 limit through the Operation Mountie campaign has a better response. We hope that the Winnie ponies that the ladies of Copythorne WI have kindly knitted for us, will aid us in educating people and spreading the word about the dangers of speeding in the New Forest.” Operation Mountie is a multi-agency campaign involving the Police, Forestry England, The New Forest National Park Authority, the Agisters and New Forest District Council all working together to raise awareness of the speed limits in the New Forest and to help to educate drivers who are travelling over the 40mph speed limit by showing them images of the animals and cars that have been involved in accidents to help them to understand the severity of speeding across the New Forest. A er the success of the national ‘Bobby Buddies’, which many Herald readers have contributed to, Copythorne WI were approached by local PCSO, Richard Williams, to see if they could knit New Forest Ponies with a ‘40’ in yellow on the side to represent the speed limit, to be handed out to the children of drivers pulled over as part of Operation Mountie. A pattern was found and the rst lot of ponies was delivered to the police and Forestry England in late September. Winnies Copythorne WI members Liz Hughes, Jo Chillcott and Sue Nisbett, present the first Winnies to the Police and Forestry England. Don’t worry, it’s not Christmas yet! However, many friends of the newly formed New Forest Sounds ladies choir have asked when the Christmas concert will be. Well it’s all arranged! e title is indeed e Night Before Christmas and the concert will be on Wednesday 7th December in St John’s Church, Hythe at 7.30pm. Tickets will be £8 to include refreshments and can be purchased from choir members or on the door. A donation will be made to charity.
