You can also donate directly to the charities mentioned, Susie would like to encourage people to help spread awareness and support of these important wildlife rescues. A series of children’s story books written by a local author are helping to raise money and awareness for two charities that help to save wildlife. e author of the books, Susie Laan, has lived in Ashurst in the New Forest for over 30 years, but spent much of her early life living in Africa. In 2015 she read ‘Love, Life and Elephants’ by Daphne Sheldrick and felt very surprised that despite growing up in Africa where she rst started to love elephants, she knew very little about what was happening to them. Susie felt inspired to raise money for the David Shepherd Wildlife Trust (DSWT) elephant conservation in Kenya and completed the Enormous far raised £1,032 for the DSWT. Susie has also penned another book, 00Tree e Secret Agent of the New Forest, which aims to educate children about the problems with litter in e New Forest. Susie comments: “My love for wildlife made me want to do something about the amount of litter in the New Forest. This litter can harm animals and plastic can blow into rivers leading to the sea. By writing and illustrating the 00Tree Secret Agent of the New Forest I found a creative way to make children aware of this problem.” All the pro ts from this book are donated to Moyles Court Wildlife Rescue near Ringwood, who Susie volunteers by helping to transport injured wildlife from the New Forest to the centre. e sales of the book have raised over £700 for the charity so far. To help with her fund raising you can buy these books All three books in the series are ideal for children aged 5 – 9 and are written entirely in rhyming poetry with hand-drawn illustrations by Susie on every page. Susie comments: “When I grew up in Africa, I became fascinated by elephants. I have used ants and elephants in a fun and creative way to educate children about these wonderful creatures great and small.” e books are available to buy directly from Susie on her website, priced at £6 each or £15 for the set of 3. e sale of the books has so Elephant Run in London. Wanting to raise more money the following year, Susie organised ‘An Enormous Elephant Art Exhibition held in Lyndhurst’ which raised over £8,000. But Susie still wanted to do more to help the plight of her beloved elephants, having continued to read and learn more about them. So she set about writing and illustrating a children’s story, developing an idea she had when she was younger that she wanted to share. e rst two books in a three book series, ‘Ant and Fant’ and ‘Battles and Beans’ were published in 2018. All pro ts from selling these books went to the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF) speci cally for their baby elephant orphanage in Zambia. During the lockdown Susie had the time to write the nal book in the series, ‘Gi-Ants’ which was published earlier this year.
