Julie’s books tell the story of the wives of the crew back in Southampton who were thrown into poverty and despair. Her own Great-grandfather, William Bessant, was a stoker who sadly perished on Titanic, leaving his wife Emily in poverty. Julie released her rst Titanic themed novel ‘The Titanic and the City of Widows it Left Behind’ in 2020. Her latest book ‘The Titanic Girls’, follows the stories of three ctional women: Lucy, Catherine and Susan, all a ected by the tragic sinking of the Titanic in 1912. e book starts by introducing the lives of the three women and their friendship prior to Titanic setting sail and follows them through the hardship and grief that they face together following the tragedy. Newlyweds Lucy and Joseph are struggling to make ends meet when he takes a job as a stoker on the Titanic. Following the tragedy Lucy is le with no breadwinner and must ght to survive for her one year old daughter Florence. Catherine is engaged to Percy who gets a job as a steward on the Titanic. Percy survives the sinking and returns home to Catherine su ering from shock. But can she cope with marrying a man the city now calls a coward for surviving the sinking? Susan completes the trio of women. She is a teacher and a secret Su ragette. Many of her pupils lose their fathers in the tragedy.
