Lee completed the Marathon in 8 hours 15 minutes, raising an amazing £2,200 for the charity that support families whose children have Type 1 Diabetes, an autoimmune condition. A charity close to Lee’s heart as his own daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes 6 years ago, during an emergency hospital visit. Lee comments: “The marathon was tough! I had contracted Covid in August and never really recovered, which meant I hadn’t trained for 6 weeks and the most I had run in preparation, was 10 miles. By mile 9, my hamstring was tight and hurting. At mile 12, I met my family, who gave me a boost and encouraged me to keep going. I made it over Tower Bridge, and headed towards the Isle of Dogs, and everything just seized up. A friend passed me and encouraged me on, and so I got slower and slower, feeling like I’m walking round in circles at times, feeling sick at mile 21 and texting my wife to say “I can’t do it”, and she reminded me that a) you’ve done it before and can do it again b) there are countless people praying for you and c) it may not feel like it, but you’re nearly there. Which spurred me on for the final 5 miles. I managed to sprint the last few hundred metres, with my family and friends cheering me on from the sides and I earned my medal. Thank you to everyone who supported, or cheered me on when out on training runs. Hythe’s iconic century old pier railway was possessed by ghosts, ghouls, phantoms and other spirit beings. Huge spiders webs hung from the carriage roofs and a demonic and sinister clown seized the controls from the regular driver. All this delighted the hundreds of local children treated to free rides along the pier as a part of Hythe’s annual Halloween Treat Trail in which local shops and business owners o ered treats to the excited youngsters parading around the village in their scary costumes. Witches on broomsticks ew in the ra ers at the pier entrance haunted by ghosts, where a skeleton named Kevin welcomed anyone who risked the Hythe Ferry Company Zombie Feast. All great fun but with a serious side. All pro ts from the sale of 1,000 treat bags are destined to the local business initiative Hythe Alive, raising funds for Hythe’s Christmas lights.
