He is buried at Moascar War Cemetery near Ismailia at the southern end of the Suez Canal, where it joins the top reach of the Red Sea. recited the Exhortation and Kohima Epitaph, we said the Lord’s Prayer and we placed a prayer card and read the prayer for Tom Kelly, Bernard’s eldest brother. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission do a wonderful job, worldwide, to keep war cemeteries pristine and cared for, and Moascar War Cemetery is a wonderful example of this. At Bernard’s grave Uncle Tom’s Grave Bernard was the youngest of my grandmother’s three brothers and along with them served in France during the 1st World War. Tom, the eldest, fell during the Battle of the Somme and four of our family visited his grave 100 years a er this in 2016. Bernard emigrated to New Zealand and joined the army there early in the 2nd World War, although he was actually quite a few years too old. He served with the New Zealand Infantry alongside the British 8th Army. We think that when he died he was 47. To visit Moascar War Cemetery, permission has to be obtained from the Egyptian Army, as it is located deep within an army base. is has to be requested via the Defence Attaché at the British Embassy in Cairo and we were given copies of the faxes sent by the embassy, to take with us. I arranged with a local tour company for a driver to take us from our airport hotel on the trip. e drive was about 1.5 hours along the 10 lane Desert Highway from Cairo to Ismailia, with security stops on the way. As we neared our destination within the Canal Zone we were stopped at a checkpoint and then instructed to follow a police o cer in his vehicle for the rest of the day. We rst went to the wrong camp, which had a large Egyptian War Cemetery, but we could show on Google Maps that we needed to be at a di erent place, and that Moascar Camp was a few miles up the road. e base had manned watch towers and a crewed armoured car just inside the gate, but paperwork was shown and we proceeded to the beautifully kept Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery. We quickly found Bernard’s grave and the gardeners came and put some small owers at the base. I had mounted his War medals which we took with us and we placed these and each laid a poppy cross with family messages. I
