Everybody was busy. And there were too many people in the house. Mog thought “I don’t like it here”. She went and sat outside” I’ve paraphrased this from Judith’s Kerr’s lovely children’s book: Mogs First Christmas because I think a lot of people and dogs can sympathise with this! But while we can nd ways of giving ourselves space, nding urgent jobs that need doing elsewhere, catching up on messages or disappearing into a book (It’s a standing joke in our house that I can’t read and hear at the same time!) dogs don’t have this option and so they can become increasingly frazzled. Like us, di erent dogs have di erent responses when it all starts getting a bit too much. Some will be quicker to growl or snap (even if they’ve never done this before), some will try and escape, some will nd a corner to hide in. Others become hyperactive, jumping up, running around or barking. It can be easy to think these dogs need a good run or ball chase to tire them out however this can be counterproductive when what they need is sleep. 5 Tips Your Dog Wants You To Know About 1. Pre-prepare treats and meals by turning them into multiple, longer-lasting activities with Kongs or Snu e Mats. is is the time for multiple small meals rather than one or two big ones. and do a treasure hunt by hiding food around the garden. 4. Set up a quiet area for your dog, away from the hustle and bustle for regular naps. If you have a puppy, like children their view is o en “But I’m not tired!”- sometimes you need to put your foot down and say “erm, yes you are tired!”. Get a chew or a licky mat (this is like reading a book before bed) and settle them away. 5. Plan ahead if you’re visiting other people. If you’re visiting locally, your dog might prefer the peace and quiet of your home with a pop-in visit. If you’re going further a eld, ask your hosts if there is somewhere you can set up a crate or bed. Some dogs are happier resting in the car they know well than an unfamiliar house. If you have a small dog who finds things difficult, get in touch to see how I can help) 2. Save card and paper packaging from your Christmas shopping to create food puzzles. A cardboard box with screwed-up paper and dry food sprinkled inside will keep most dogs entertained. e brain exercise will also make them sleepy. 3.
