Cars packed up with barely awake teenagers and co eefuelled parents and the trip to Basingstoke was made by 20 players from Fawley U15’s to face an imposing squad of 36. e teams lined up on the main pitch of Basingstoke RFC with spectators given the luxury of dry seats and shelter in the stands which added to the gravitas of the match. Basingstoke opened with a strong starting XV and kept Fawley in their own half for the opening portion of the rst half. is forced Fawley to be aggressive in defence and work on their well rehearsed tactics at the breakdown and in the defensive line. is remained the theme of the half with so much rugby played between the teams 22 lines. A half time score of 10-7 in favour of Basingstoke. Outside centre Reece scoring the rst try o the back of a great run and well timed pass by fullback Toby releasing him into space and y half Oli converting. e second half opened with an instant try from the kick o by number 12 Jerry using his full Fijian air to side step and confuse the opposition down the blindside wing and then making a sympathetic touch down between the posts. An intense period of brutal, but spectatorpleasing, rugby ensued with both sets of forwards taking lumps out of each other. y half Oli was able to ght through players and strike a loose ball and use his footballing skills to put together two kicks and secure the ball for his rst try of the season (adding to his points tally from penalties and conversion as well as giving him a try rather than a try assist). O the back of a fantastic lineout leap and quick ball o the top by anker Dylan, scrum half Harley was able to put in a perfect pass to awaiting anker Jake who put his head down and used his Gridiron background the push aside defenders and secure his rst score of the season. e play continued with Basingstoke working well up the eld and looking likely to release their quick back line out wide. But play returned to the 22 o the boot of Oli and an attempted clearance kick was secure by loosehead Al e who motored head down straight over the try line for his rst Fawley try which was celebrated with immense gusto by players and coaches. Some experiments from the coaching team saw Reece move from 13 into the pack at blindside anker, a hard run side stepping a defender and then drawing contact and a spectacular back door o oad whilst going to ground was secured by winger Alex S who rocketed towards the goal line for his rst Fawley try since joining the team. Joey, normally number 8, played in the front row today and with some gentle persuasion he was able to convince Oli to allow him take up the kicking duties and he slotted his rst ever conversion attempt. Every rugby player loves it when a prop kicks. A massive well done to all the players from both squads and a huge thanks to Basingstoke for giving the lads a fantastic matchday experience. e 2021/22 season saw the teams face each other twice and both teams getting a 50 points win a piece. To see the development and progress of all the players is testament to the coaching and e orts by all parents, players and club volunteers and only serves to develop the high standard of age grade rugby across Hampshire. Fawley RFC based at Newlands Park at Gang Warily have nally broken ground on their new clubhouse.
