Located within the walled kitchen garden of Houghton Lodge Gardens, the champion espaliered pear tree, ‘Beurre Diel’, spans the west-facing wall, with an incredible width of 53.6” long (16.33 meters). Houghton Lodge Gardens, which celebrates its 230th Anniversary this year, recently welcomed e Worshipful e Mayor of Romsey Councillor Alan Dowden, and Mayoress Councillor Celia Dowden, for a special visit to view the world record holding pear tree and to tour the gardens including the heritage orchard with many historic apple and pear trees, formal and informal gardens, woodland grotto and water meadows complete with alpacas and Hebridean sheep. ey also had a sneak preview of the new oriental garden before it was open to the public. Houghton Lodge owner, Sophie Busk said: “We are delighted that Guinness World Records have announced we have a new world record and that our Champion Pear is officially the longest in the world! This old species of pear loves growing as an espalier, hence why it’s succeeded so well growing against our wall. It’s a real honour and another reason for visitors to come and visit.” e glorious pear tree is not the only recognised tree in the gardens. e Tree Register also discovered an Acer Cappadocicum ‘Aureum’ (Golden Cappadocian Maple), found in the plantings behind the summer house, which at 15m x 182cm at 0.7m has been awarded the Hampshire County champion for height and girth. The Register also identi ed the lovely Gingko in the yard by the house as being the 4th tallest in Hampshire. A er a brief AGM the Members Cup was awarded to Jo Lapage for her enthusiastic promotion of the club at events, for managing the rst aid kits and for going out of her way to help others. Following delicious refreshments, long-standing member Allan Mechen gave a fascinating talk on how to prepare before carving – well timed for many of the relatively new members but reminders to those more experienced too. e a ernoon nished with a ra e and a vote for the topic for this year’s Wood Block challenge. Members were able to purchase lime wood blocks, tools, timber, books and club clothing. Woodcarving Workshops at Noadswood School resume for the summer term on Thursday 27th April, 6pm to 8pm. Many of the new members have completed their half dolphins, so they are now keen to spread their wings and try something new.
