Advice from Dr Susan Phillips BDS MSc DPDS Principal Dentist at Water Lane Dental in Totton Of course I’m going to say ‘yes’. A er all it’s what I do, but perhaps I can encourage you to book an appointment soon. Here’s why: Keep small problems, from becoming big problems ere’s a lot going on in your mouth that you can’t necessarily see. A bit of decay between your teeth, tartar hiding just below your gum line, broken llings and acid damage. Regular visits ensure small problems are prevented from becoming larger issues. And your dentist will give you tailored, targeted advice to help you prevent future problems. My favourite bit of advice that works for everyone – DON’T rinse your mouth out a er using a uoride toothpaste. Spit but don’t rinse. Leaving a little bit of paste on the teeth helps make them stronger and more resilient. Oral health care is closely related to general health We know improving your oral health makes you a healthier person overall. By reducing the in ammation of gum disease with regular visits to the hygienist you can reduce your risks of heart disease, Alzheimer’s and stroke, as well as preventing tooth loss. Be kind to your future self by looking a er your mouth now. Maintain a high quality of life If you’re in pain or simply uncomfortable or embarrassed with your smile, your quality of life su ers. It’s di cult to enjoy the food and drinks you love when something in your mouth hurts. Regular dental visits can rectify any issues you have and help safeguard your ability to smile, speak, and eat. Now that’s something to smile about! And here’s another top tip – if you are concerned about bad breath, make sure you’re cleaning the top of your tongue as well as your teeth! You can use your toothbrush to do this or you can buy a cheap ‘tongue scraper’. Most mouth odour comes from the bacteria living on the surface knowing you have a dentist who can help you if something does happen in your mouth, like a broken lling or toothache the day before you go on holiday!
